Coming home to roost

Happy Chinese New Year - 2017 the year of the Rooster. Across the world people have been celebrating with lion dances, dragons, red lanterns, red money envelopes, fireworks and, of course, delicious Chinese street food.

I had decided to take an easy option and buy in some ready meals. Marks and Spencer had a great offer of 2 mains and 3 sides for £10. Sadly, none of the mains were vegetarian. BIG mistake M+S - huge! I had to revert to my standby homemade Mushroom Fried Rice:-

Fry mushrooms down adding soy sauce and ground black pepper
Boil long grain rice, adding frozen peas in the last 2 mins
Lightly fry a few chopped spring onions
Scramble one egg
Once everything is cooked mix them all together adding more soy sauce (if you have cashew nuts stir them in to the mixture and warm through)

Serve with sweet chilli sauce and Thai spiced crackers followed by a fortune cookie - it may determine your new year outlook on life.

Food for thought

I have a very long bucket list of things I want to try before I die but hadn't included food in it. Having just read an article in The Telegraph entitled the ultimate foodie bucket list there are definitely some foods I need to try.

Yes to fresh coconuts on a St Lucia beach; fresh bagels in New York; al Khalsa dates in Oman; pastel de natas (custard tarts) in Portugal; lingonberry juice in Sweden; sachertorte in Austria, ripe figs in Spain or Greece, gaufres (filled waffles) in France; Alba white truffles, pizza and gelato in Italy.

The thing all these foods have in common is that I need to travel to enjoy them. Now travel is definitely on my bucket list but now I have a reason to visit these places.

The Nineties

My life as a vegetarian began in 1990 and I certainly wasn't the only one; the number of vegetarians in the country doubled during the nineties. The world was changing with a new Labour government, IKEA encouraging us to "chuck out the chintz", Changing Rooms and Ground Force showing us we could live differently from our parents and the food world was revolutionised.

- there was a greater variety of vegetables and fruit from around the world
- superstores sold everything under one roof and value brands were introduced
- bags of mixed salad leaves were available
- organic food became popular 
- veggie box schemes began
- cooking became a leisure activity done at the weekends using quality fresh ingredients 
- barbecues (including gas-fired) were used
- eating out (gastropubs) was done more frequently and cafe culture was beginning
- Ready Steady Cook was on the TV
- Delia Smith and Jamie Oliver simplified home cooking and entertaining
- Masterchef was aired for the first time
- the recession meant many men were at home/worked from home and would cook meals
- people liked holding dinner parties and showing off ingredients and culinary skills
- supermarkets stocked wines from around the world 
- wine programmes were aired and books published
- aspirational gadgets included cafetières, (Philip Starke) juicers, pasta machines
- people were time-poor midweek and convenience foods were available including chilled, ready meals, jars of sauce (Chicken Tonight), pre made pasta (tortellini)
- in the early 1990s a lot of meat was consumed but when Mad Cow Disease broke out, beef sales plummeted. Despite the government saying the meat was okay, a variant of BSE could kill humans

We take all of the above for granted now and the world is moving on apace but look at how the food industry changed, for better and for worse, during the nineties.

The Flues and the Blues

My last post was full of anticipation for the main event and now it's all over. I've been laid low with a cough and cold over Christmas and a fluey virus over the New Year. Having missed walks, drinks, meals, games and shopping trips with family and friends I have been feeling physically below par and mentally down in the dumps.

There has been the odd glimmer of joy; one in the form of these vegetarian fruit jellies sent by my sister


The other some delicious squash soup made by my friend. I'm not sure what recipe she used but it was thick, tasty and comforting. I like my squash soup to have a little kick of either chilli or ginger for taste and added health benefits.
